Bhekumuzi Mathuthu –Gender Focal Person,Ward 11

For Bhekumuzi Mathuthu, SWRGN did more than
provide training it reshaped his worldview. Through
gender-based violence (GBV) awareness sessions, he
learnt about the many forms of violence affecting
women and children, from child marriages to sexual
abuse.
“These trainings made me realise the importance of
supporting survivors,” he says. “Today, I can counsel
community members and guide them when they face
problems.”

SWRGN also strengthened his livelihood skills. Bheku
muzi now grows tomatoes, potatoes, sugar beans, and
mealies, and he manages a small herd of goats. He
dreams of upgrading to Boer goats and hopes to
collaborate with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs to
achieve this.
Inspired by the project’s teachings, he gives back to the
community by visiting Dula Secondary School twice a
month to speak to learners and donate sanitary pads.
As a young married man, he now understands the
importance of buying sanitary wear for his wife some
thing he once felt shy about.
“Youths in Ward 11 now participate confidently in
community meetings,” he says. “We just hope for a
youth centre where we can discuss issues like drug
abuse and unemployment.”
Despite market access and irrigation challenges,
Bhekumuzi remains grateful: “From 2018 to 2025,
SWRGN has supported us. Their teachings shaped my
confidence, my knowledge, and my livelihood.”
“Women now buy livestock and pay school fees.”
